Buzzwords now include buzzacronyms and buzzhyphens: ABS (anti-lock braking system), Omega-3 (polyunsaturated fatty acids), and Low-E (low emissivity glass). But Low-E is beginning to look more like algebra. Cardinal Glass developed a new generation of Low-E glass called, LoĒ3-366. But before moving on to algebra, let’s review some basic math.

Basic Math. Low-E is a reflective glass with a thin metallic coating. Its benefits fit the Midwest like a glove:

  • Reduces heat loss through windows.
  • Allows sunlight in without letting heat out.
  • Resists UV, reducing damage to carpets & draperies • Reduces glare

Low-E Algebra. Low-E’s energy-efficiency spawned a second generation called, LoĒ2 (two layers of silver coatings), and now, LoĒ3-366 (three layers). According to Cardinal Glass, LoĒ3-366 “delivers the ideal balance of solar control and high visibility.” It also blocks 95% of the sun’s damaging UV rays:

  • SHGC: 0.27; U-factor: 0.24
  • TDW (measures fade reduction): 0.43
  • Light transmission: 66%
  • Windows with LoĒ3-366 qualify for the tax credits

What's next? LoE-Fusion with a pivoting head?

"Two blades shave better than one"

But do five shave better than two?

Remember when Gillette introduced Trac II in 1971, then followed it with Trac II Plus (lubricating strip), Atra (pivoting head), Mach 3 (triple-blade), Sensor (spring-loaded blades), and Fusion (5-blades) in 2007? Do five blades shave better than one? Low-E's evolution offers real benefits.
